ISLAMABAD: A paramedic allegedly tried to rape a disabled patient at the largest hospital of Islamabad, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
A male nurse of the hospital, Krishan Kumar (28), who was drunk on duty, arrived at the bed of a 22 years old disabled patient in the intensive care unit (ICU) and allegedly tried to rape her in the late hours of the night when her father went out of the hospital. At the time neither any doctor nor nurse was present in the ward.
Luckily in the mean time the father of the patient reached there and made hue and cry. After listening to his clamour, the duty nurses and security guards reached there, but the accused fled the scene.
The hospital administration suspended Kumar. In addition, male staff members were stopped from entering the female wards at night.
It is pertinent to mention here that it was the fifth incident of this kind at the PIMS. Nurses were the victims in the previous four incidents and their male colleagues were the victimisers, but this time a patient was the target. Some time ago, a male nurse raped a female nurse. The PIMS administration has constituted a three-member committee to probe the matter under the supervision of Dr Abid Farooqui. The committee would present its report today (Tuesday).
State Minister for Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary has taken action on the incident and asked the PIMS management to get a case registered with the police against the accused. On the application of the executive director of the hospital, case was registered with the Karachi Company Police Station.
Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Akram said the incident that occurred at the hospital was condemnable. The Prime Minister’s Inspection Cell also took notice of the incident and a higher official of PM’s Secretariat visited the hospital. He met the father of the target as well as the senior administration of the PIMS. He ordered the arrest of the accused at the earliest.
