Nawaz tasks ex-CJP to find judge for probe

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has sought former chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry’s help to convince a former judge to head the inquiry commission on the Panama leaks, sources said on Monday.

Not even a single retired judge of good reputation is ready to head the enquiry commission that would look into the offshore companies allegedly owned by the Sharif family.

The blunt refusal of the judges has put the Sharif family into hot waters and now the prime minister is seeking help from the judges who were close to him in the past.

A close aide of the former chief justice said that a common friend of Chaudhry and Sharif contacted the former chief justice and assigned him the task to get some former judge ready to head the inquiry commission. He said the prime minister set the condition that the judge should be either from Punjab or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the sources, Chaudhry said that he could not pressurise any judge to head the inquiry commission. There are reports that the ruling party has also contacted former Supreme Court chief justice Jawwad S. Khawaja to head the inquiry commission.

It is learnt that Sharif was angry at his adviser Barrister Zafarullah Khan for his failure to get a judge ready to head the commission. Sharif stopped Khan from contacting any judge and assigned this task to Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf and Minister of State Anusha Rehman.
