KARACHI: Amid political storm triggered by a mega leak by Panama Papers, government and the opposition have reportedly agreed on curtailing the powers of NAB, FIA and Rangers.

Sources told Daily Times that contact has been established between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari in London through some common friends in which the matter relating to curtailing the powers of these three departments, which come under federal government, were discussed.

The sources said that former president Zardari had delivered a message to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif before his tour to London that PPP would not support any attempt to send the prime minister home. A meeting held a few days back with Bilawal Bhutto in the chair also refused an offer by the PTI to join its protest against the Sharif family. The PM had, subsequently, instructed his party leaders to cut the hostility towards PPP.

The sources said if both the leaders agree on the matter, a bill would be tabled in the National Assembly to trim the powers of NAB, FIA and Rangers. The bill would also include a clause on either setting up an accountability commission at the provincial level or making the provincial anti-corruption department more effective.
