Rehman Malik and his motorcycle ban

Author:

Sir: It does not seem as though Federal Minister Rehman Malik has put his foot in it this time. Before the beginning of the holy month of Muharram, Mr Malik cried himself hoarse trying to enforce a motorcycle ban in Karachi. This is because most crimes are carried out by masked men on motorcycles and Muharram presents itself as the perfect opportunity for nefarious elements to strike. However, the courts struck down Rehman Malik’s orders and, lo and behold, Sunday night saw an imambargah targeted by a bomb blast, killing three people — the bomb was strapped to a motorcycle. One really feels torn at the predicament we find ourselves in: it is impossible to stop using motorcycles for even a day because most Pakistanis use one to get around. It is even more difficult to ensure that terror attacks can be lessened with such steps being taken. We need to see heightened security and police work, culprits caught and legal action taken instead of the citizens being made to suffer.
