Move to mollify political parties on Panama leaks : Cabinet to discuss forming of govt’s body

Author: By Shamshad Mangat

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet , on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will consult on making a high-level committee to take all political parties into confidence on the Panama paper leaks.

The proposed committee will contact all the political parties to remove the apprehensions of the opposition by amending the terms of reference (ToR) for constitution of the judicial commission so that the probe of the Panama leaks could be carried out from a powerful , effective and impartial commission , backed by all political leadership. The government’s committee will also discuss a future strategy with the political leaders, if Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali , on his return to the homeland refuses to form a judicial commission.

The committee will make an effort to develop a political consensus to compose a parliamentary commission as a second option in case the CJP returns the PM’s letter without taking any action on it. The proposed committee will then commence negotiations with the political leadership under the chairmanship of the PM’s daughter Mariyam Nawaz .

The cabinet meeting will also discuss other important point to shut down loadshedding during the holy month of Ramadan , whereas the meeting will also talk about the current situation of the power crises in the country. The PML(N) government has a plan to launch an advertisement campaign from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat to let the people know about the performance of the government especially its endeavours to end load-shedding from the country in three years.

This campaign would also be supervised by Mariyam Nawaz . The sources told this reporter that during the cabinet meeting the working of the federal ministers would also be discussed and it is very much likely that a change in portfolios may also take place. The PM, during Tuesday’s meeting would also directed the federal ministers to gear up a mass contact drive and to make a success of the public meetings especially those which will be addressed by the Prime Minister himself.

The cabinet meeting will also converse the matter regarding the provision of seeds(bardana) to the farmers in Punjab and Sindh , as most of the parliamentarians have complaints about not receiving the wheat seeds by the peasants for the next cultivation.

The sources said that the PM would also consult his ministers on the proposal of increasing the price of petroleum products from next month as several PML(N) leaders advised the government not to raise it but the PM would take a final decision in this regard after Wednesday’s consultation. Reliable sources told the Daily Times that this was the preset agenda but due to rise in political temperature of the country nowadays, certainly the talks in cabinet meeting would be held outside the agenda as the Federal Minister for Law, Zahid Hamid, was still standing on his stance to announce of holding mid-term elections in the country.
