UN shows concern over Pakistan-India tensions

NEW YORK: The United Nations has expressed concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following unprovoked Indian firing across the Line of Control (LoC), which recently claimed lives of at least two civilians.

“The situation (in Kashmir) continues to be of concern to us,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guetteres’ spokesperson said in response to a question by a Pakistani journalist at the regular noon briefing.

When asked if the secretary-general at any point in time was trying to take time out to assess the situation and talk to the leaders of the subcontinent, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric added, “The secretary-general is following the situation very closely… we’re watching the situation.”

Pakistan summoned a senior Indian diplomat to protest against Indian troops’ firing and urged New Delhi to respect the 2003 ceasefire agreement. At least two people were martyred and six others – including four women – injured by unprovoked firing by Indian forces along the LoC on Thursday.
