ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue has expressed apprehensions over tax payments by the government functionaries and has written a letter to Finance Ministry to seek permission to verify the record of last 15 years in this connection.
Those government institutions on which the FBR raised questions including PIA, CDA, Pakistan Railways, OGDCL, OGRA, Pakistan Steels and other . In the letter, written to Secretary Finance, the FBR also sought authorization to check the 15 years’ record of the different housing societies. The sources told Daily Times that government departments were paying income tax and property tax to FBR annually but during the cross check, some enormous discrepancies in the figures filed by these departments had come to the surface which had created ambiguity in FBR.
It is a practice for many years that to achieve the tax collection target, FBR conducts audit of the per annum accounts of different government departments in the last quarter of the financial year.
But this time FBR is looking for a special audit of 15 years of different government offices. Recently FBR had withdrawn the amount of 680 million rupees from the account of CDA despite the stay order from the court to attain the hard target of tax revenue collection.
