KARACHI – Sindh Rangers Director General Major General Bilal Akbar admitted that deceased MQM worker Aftab Ahmed was tortured by the paramilitary force in custody, a private TV channel reported.
He assured that ‘strict’ action would be taken against those responsible for this misconduct. He insisted that Aftab’s death had occurred due to a ‘heart attack.’ He accepted that Aftab was tortured during custody and the standard operating procedures were not followed by ‘some’ security personnel in this case.
General Akbar also formed a committee to probe the matter. The statement comes after pictures and videos viral on the social media, reportedly showing the corpse of the deceased having major torture marks across his body.
On Wednesday, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif also ordered an inquiry into the death of Aftab Ahmed. Directing to hold an inquiry into political worker’s death, he instructed justice must be done, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
On the complaints of chest pain, the suspect was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he died of ‘heart failure,’ according to the rangers. A counsel for the rangers also informed the court that the MQM activist was involved in killing of as many as 40 peoples.
