ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday said it would take the parliamentarians and donor agencies on board to increase women participation in electoral process.

While talking to media after chairing a meeting of civil society members on the issues pertaining to the registration of female voters, ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob said the commission wanted greater political participation of women.

ECP Additional Secretary Sher Afghan said that women-registered votes were less as compared to men. Stressing the need for steps to improve participation of women in next elections, he said it was unfortunate that around one million women were without identity cards.

Afghan said the ECP was endeavouring to issue ID cards to women and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) was extending full support in this regard.

The participants of the meeting noted that women registration in different areas was very low and there was need to chalk out separate strategies, keeping in view the cultural aspects of each area.
