LAHORE: Many parts of the country will continue to swelter under heatwave conditions for a couple of days more, with the mercury level predicted to hover between 46 and 49 degree Celsius.

A meteorological official Sunday said that the weather is expected to remain hot and humid in the city. The maximum temperature is likely to remain between 46 and 49 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, citizens flocked to Lahore Canal and swimming pools to beat the heat amid prolonged power outages on Sunday.

Youngsters have found a foolproof way of beating the heat by jumping into the cool water of the canal. Hundreds of people, frustrated with the heat and load shedding could be witnessed sitting by the canal, with their feet dipped in water. “We locked our houses and came here to beat the heat,” said families.

Talking to Daily Times, people, including children and women, said that were left on the mercy of heat by the government and the canal had provided them a chance to cool themselves off. They said that canal in the middle of Lahore was real blessing as there was no load shedding or shortage of water in the canal. “If this would be given to the government, we might face shortage as well,” they said.

The scorching heat also reduced traffic on roads, leaving markets deserted with people preferring to shop in the evening. People travelling on motorbikes and public transport were facing a tough time.

Medical experts have advised citizens to consume as much water as possible to avoid dehydration and not venture outdoors unnecessarily.

According to the Met Office, the current heatwave will continue and may increase in June until the monsoon rains begin in July.
