SJC to hear references against two judges today

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC)l presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Anwar Zaheer Jamali, will take up hearing of references against Justice Shahid Hamid Dar of Lahore High Court (LHC) and Justice Muhammad Daud Khan of Peshawar High Court (PHC) today (Tuesday).

The other members of the SJC are senior judge of Supreme Court (SC) Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Saeed Ahmad Khan Khosa, Chief Justice (CJ) Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Anwar Khan Kasi and justice Mazhar Alam Khan Mian Khel.

Reference of maltreatment with a police man in the court will be heard against Justice Shahid Hamid Dar of LHC who will appear in person in the SJC to present his stance.

The rivals of Justice Muhammad Daud Khan of PHC have accused him of occupying their land and he will also present his stance by appearing in person before the SJC. As many as three separate references against CJ IHC, Justice Anwar Khan Kasi, will come up for hearing before the SJC on Wednesday. The CJ IHC will not be part of the SJC on this day and in his place Muhammad Noor Meskanzai , CJ Balochistan High Court (BHC), will participate in the hearing process. CJ IHC Muhammad Anwar Kasi is charged with appointing his brother as deputy registrar IHC , overlooking rules and regulations and appointing his two associates in Grades 17 and 18. The SJC will hear references against Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi of LHC and Justice Mazhar Iqbal Sidhu on Thursday. Show cause notices were issued to these two judges and they would give reply to these notices on Thursday.

The SJC will also review references against Justice Ali Akbar Najfi of LHC and Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of IHC on Thursday.

Justice Ali Akbar Najfi is accused of giving partial decisions. Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui is charged with obtaining allotment of three government residences separately from Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and getting his government residence decorated at a cost of over Rs 12 million by the CDA.

He is also accused of favouring his close friend assistant director Shahid Singha and helping in allotment of a precious plot to director Manzoor Sheikh against rules and regulations. The SJC will decide whether to issue show cause notices to these two judges or otherwise. Well placed sources said that reference against the alleged owner of an off shore company, Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan, was still passing through the process of scrutiny. The SJC will take further action in this respect when the reference takes final shape.
