ROME: Swiss professional tennis player Roger Federer made a victorious come back by beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a 6-3, 7-5 winning score, after withdrawing from last week’s back pain, in the second round of the Rome Masters on Wednesday.

After losing the Monte Carlo quarter final to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the Swiss tennis player played the 89-minute match for the first time after a month.

The 17-time Grand Slam winner was due to play last week in Madrid but withdrew from it complaining about lower back pain. He came to Rome early for training, drawing 6,000 fans to a weekend practice session.

Seeking his first title here, Federer is playing at the Foro Italico sports complex for the 16th time. Last year, Federer finished four runnerups against Novak Djokovic.

Victory over Zverev sent Federer’s record to 11-3 in 2016. His next match is against promising young Austrian 13th seed Dominic Thiem, who defeated Portugal’s Joao Sousa scoring a 6-3, 6-2.

Rome marks only the fourth tournament of the season for Federer, who underwent knee surgery in early February – the first operation of his career.
