KARACHI: Filmmakers from Lyari area of the Sindh capital city have made their way to the international awards when they grabbed their award for standing first in the category of the best short films at the International Youth Creativity Award in Bahrain.

The short film Jaawar – meaning ongoing situation in the Balochi language – won first prize at the awards, endorsed by Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa who is also member of the Bahrain’s royal family.

The runners up include participants from Mexico and Egypt. The Jaawar portrays a story based on a man who has been traumatized by the bloodshed and violence in Lyari. Ahsan Shah is the writer and director of this short film. “I did not imagine that my short film will make up to the international arena,” he said.

He said that he had not imagined that their film would make it this big on the international arena.  Ahsan, along with his friends, runs a film-making company called Nosach which means new inventors. Through this platform they have made several short films.

He said that many local film-making groups participated in the making of the award-winning film. Ahsan, who is doing his intermediate in commerce, said the team doesn’t have advance equipment and is mostly short on funds, but this didn’t stop them from trying hard and dreaming big.
