ISLAMABAD: Seven years have passed and the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control has failed to make significant progress to start the project of construction of a Model Prison in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
The project was conceived in 2009 and was planned to be completed by the end of 2013, however, the land procurement was delayed due to mismanagement in the CDA. When contacted an official of Ministry of Interior said the ministry has sent PC-1 of the project to Ministry of Planning and Development for approval. The work would be started soon once the PC-1 approved, he added.
He said initially the ministry had demanded Rs.4530.460 million for the construction of Model Prison in ICT.
Ministry of Interior has already purchased 720 kanals of land from CDA in sector H-16 for this purpose and further development work would be initiated by the executing agency i.e. Pak PWD as soon as PC-I is approved, the official informed.
The prison would have a capacity to house over 2,000 prisoners. A boundary wall to secure the area from encroachments has already been constructed by the Pakistan Public Works Department.
He said the concept of the project would be comprehensive in all aspects containing all security features and requirements of a model prison along with requisite facilities for the prisoners. He said Adyala Jail has been visited by PWD officials earlier to review security features and make it more comprehensive in all terms.
