NAB completes probe against 83 officers

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has completed inquiry against its 83 senior officers on corruption charges, a well informed source confided to this scribe on the condition of anonimity. 83 senior officers were allegedly involved in minting money by harassing accused persons whose cases were being inquired by NAB.

Chairman National Accountability Bureau, Chaudry Qamar Zaman, initiated an inquiry against these corrupt officers holding key posts in NAB. The inquiry was launched on public complaints backed by solid evidence.

After receiving complaints against these officers, the chairman devised an internal accountability strategy to weed out corruption from NAB on the policy now adopted: “Zero tolerance for corruption”.

The accused officers were given a chance of their self explanation by serving then show cause notices and after receiving the noices, all the accused officers appeared before the investigation officer and recorded their statements, the source said.

The source added that the senior officers who were penalised on corruption charges belong to all directorates of NAB spread over five cities of the country.

In the light of their statements and the complaints against them, the report was given final touches. The source also said that an inquiry report against these officers had now been submitted before the chairman NAB for further action.

According to the report, 22 senior officers had been penalised for committing serious crimes during the investigation of mega corruption scams involving billions of rupees.

According to the report, 34 senior officers and other NAB employees were awarded a minor penalty owing to the nature of the complaints and evidence.

The report says that only four senior officers were exonerated and 11 officers are still facing a corruption inquiry as their cases are of a complicated nature.

Chairman NAB has already said that corruption among the NAB officers would not be tolerated as NAB was established to weed out corruption and bribery from Pakistan.

The source further stated that NAB officer Kamran, who had already been arrested and suspended from the services on corruption charges , allegedly received two air conditioners
for his residence from the person who was facing a corruption inquiry in NAB. The Bureau has now got an FIR registered against him and inquiry is in progress.
