Body formed to probe sexual harassment of patient at PIMS

ISLAMABAD: A three member committee has been constituted to probe into alleged sexual harassment of a lady patient by post graduate trainee doctor of Neurology Department of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) Islamabad.

The committee will conclude its inquiry within 3 days and present its report to Vice Chancellor (VC) PIMS while the said doctor has been barred from performing his duty.

Trainee doctor Irfan from Neurology Department is said to have called a lady patient (S), 25 hailing from Kohat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the evening on the pretext of treatment and attempted to subject her to sexual harassment. Father of the lady patient rushed to the doctor’s room when her daughter started crying for help and took her out of the room. On his hue and cry, hospital staff gathered around him and brought him to the office of Deputy Director evening Farrukh Kamal. They both lodged complaint in writing against the trainee doctor therein.

Administrator PIMS, Fazal Maula took notice of the incident and forwarded the written application to vice chancellor Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto University with recommendations for holding inquiry into the case.

VC PIMS has constituted a three-member inquiry committee forthwith to inquire into the incident and present report thereof within 3 days to him and in the light of inquiry committee report future line of action will be evolved.

When contacted administrator PIMS Hospital told Daily Times that a written application has been received from the lady patient against trainee doctor and case of trainee doctor has been sent to VC as the matters related to post graduate trainee doctors fall in the ambit of vice chancellor of the university.

It is pertinent to mention here that this is second incident of sexual harassment occurred in PIMS during the last 45 days.

Earlier the incident of subjecting a disabled lady patient to sexual violence by a male nurse of PIMS in ICU ward had come to fore. Reacting to it, state minister for CADD, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry had removed the employee from job and handed over him to police. He is at Adiala Jail at present. One Azmat, a male nurse was also suspended from service on the charges of sexual harassment earlier.
