ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Maj Gen(r) Syed Shakeel Hussain has handed over the second consignment of relief assistance for the flood victims to the Sri Lankan authorities.

The consignment was received on behalf of the Sri Lankan government by Ministry of Disaster Management Additional Secretary Wasantha Samaraweera at Bandaranaike International Airport Katunayake, according to a source here on Wednesday.

A cargo plane from Pakistan brought relief items containing shelters and tents which were specified by the Sri Lankan authorities as immediate requirements for the flood victims.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had directed the relevant authorities last week to make immediate arrangements for the provision of emergency relief goods to the flood victims in Sri Lanka.

According to the Sri Lankan government’s assessments, 427,918 people belonging to 105,360 families were affected by floods and landslides.

The floods and landslides caused by torrential rains with gale force completely damaged about 474 houses while 3,674 others were partially damaged.

Accordingly the first consignment of relief items containing generators, shelters, tents and medicines were handed over by the High Commissioner of Pakistan to the Sri Lankan Minister for Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa M.P.
