While E! News has obtained court documents filed by actress and singer Gwyneth Paltrow requesting a default judgment to dissolve the marriage, it appears that it has not yet been approved by the judge.

The actress filed the request to the court after Martin failed to respond to the initial divorce filing. Gwyneth Paltrow signed the declaration for default on April 17.

A little over a year since Paltrow filed for divorce from singer and songwriter Chris Martin, their separation has been legally finalised.

According to legal documents obtained by E! News, their 12-year marriage is over and both parties have given up their rights to spousal support while determining child custody, visitation and support in a private agreement.

Fans first learned of trouble in their nearly decade-long union when the pair shared a lengthy message on the Oscar winner’s website, Goop, while infamously referencing the phrase “conscious uncoupling”.

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate,” a statement read on the Oscar winner’s website, Goop.

“We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”

While Paltrow moved on to date director and producer Brad Falchuk and Chris Martin subsequently began a new romance with British actress Annabelle Wallis, they both have kept their promises as parents and continue to keep each other in their lives with their children.

“He’s like my brother. I’m really close to him,” she told Matt Lauer on ‘Today’. “We’re a family. Even though we’re not in a romantic relationship, we’re a true family and we like to do things to reinforce that we’re a family for the children (and) for each other.”

When Thanksgiving came, they honoured the day together. When the Coldplay frontman was slated to perform the halftime show at Super Bowl 50, Paltrow and the kids were cheering from the crowd. They commemorated the start of their conscious uncoupling last year on a family vacation in Mexico and continued to travel together since then, most recently to Peru in early April.

“We’re not living together, but he’s more than welcome to be with us whenever he wants. And vice versa: I sleep in his house in Malibu a lot with the kids. We’ll have a weekend all together; holidays, we’re together,” Paltrow told Glamour. “We’re still very much a family, even though we don’t have a romantic relationship. He’s like my brother.”
