Sports help me to be competitive and resilient to fight for girls’ education: Malala

Author: Hira Khalid

The Advocate for girl’s education, women equality, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, took to twitter to support women in sports. She has partnered up with a brand in hopes to end period poverty, and has highlighted the importance of sports, specifically for women.

She explained that as a child, she enjoyed playing cricket with her friends and her brothers, but as time went on, she realized that those that she once played with, considered her weaker.

The female players were not considered equal, which is why they didn’t put the same strength and stamina when playing with girls.

“As a girl, I loved to play cricket with my friends and brothers. But I noticed that boys would throw a slower ball to me, assuming girls were afraid to hit a fastball. I always shouted back at them and told them to throw the ball like they would if I were a boy.

Playing sports helped give me the boldness to be competitive and resilient in my fight for girls’ education and equality. That’s why I’m partnering with @always_brand to help more girls stay in sports. Always will make a donation to @ymca for every pack purchased and every filled in Instagram story template to help”

She mentioned that she noticed that most of her friends had stopped playing any form of sports, at puberty.

She urged women to continue their sports journey without any fear and mentioned how playing cricket influenced her individuality.

She asked her followers to share their experience and how sports during and after puberty helped them shape themselves.

Most of the women who stop playing sports after puberty is due to the fact that they aren’t influenced as much, along with  period poverty playing a huge role in this.

This initiative by Malala, will help donate to the YMCA with every purchase of sanitary napkins.

Malala further mentioned fierce women in sports that she looks up to, like tennis star Serena Williams, and the Pakistani squash player Maria Toorpakai Wazir.
