LAHORE: Punjab Fisheries Department Director General Iftikhar Ahmed Qureshi Sunday said that Rs 632 million has been spent for new hatcheries and nursery units besides the use of barren lands for fish farming.
In first phase, 60 acres of land was procured in Lahore at Bhaseen at a cost of Rs 14 million to establish a large hatchery whereas suitable lands were being examined for other districts, he said.
Presiding over a review meeting regarding ongoing projects, he said five nursery units over five acres of land each would be set up in Pakpattan, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Chiniot and Nankana Sahib.
Qureshi said in order to meet fish seed requirements of the public and private sectors, barren lands would be utilised and a comprehensive plan had been devised at a cost of Rs 165 million.
He said under this project, a fish seed hatchery would be established in Rajanpur district which will increase production capacity of fish seed from 600 to 800 metric tonnes.
