LONDON: Open heart surgery of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif concluded successfully, Maryam Nawaz, daughter of the prime minister, tweeted on Tuesday.

The PM’s son, Hussain Nawaz, spoke to the media and said that his father was content when he went into the operation theatre. “My father’s morale was high when he went into the operation theatre,” he said. After PM Nawaz was shifted to the operation theater, his relatives started praying for his welfare and recited Durood. Chief Minister of Punjab and brother of PM Nawaz, Shahbaz Sharif was also present with other Sharif family members in the hospital.

Sources said that the prime minister spoke to his mother on the phone prior to his operation and asked her for her prayers. Sources also said that he embraced Shahbaz before being taken into the operation theatre.  Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Afghanistan’s Ashraf Ghani, India’s Narendra Modi and other world leaders had also wished PM Nawaz a speedy recovery and had expressed hopes for a successful operation. Earlier, PM Nawaz had presided over a budget meeting and a meeting of the National Economic Council from the Pakistan High Commission in London via video link on Monday.
