Child labour in Pakistan

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Child labour is a major issue in Pakistan, which has not been resolved yet. Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives them of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school and that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful.

It is estimated that a quarter of the country’s workforce comprises child labourers. In Hyderabad, children enter the workforce at the age of 8-10 years and they make bangles and bracelets. Poverty is the main reason for child labour. In order to earn a living for their families, children have to work.

The low cost of child labour gives manufacturers a significant advantage, that is why they engage them in various capacities. The government should provide vocational training and education to these child labourers so that they could become responsible citizens. There is a need for raising awareness among parents and employers about the importance of education and the hazards children face at the workplace. The government should bring out a solid strategy to discourage child labour in the country and support poor families by providing them financial assistance and job opportunities.
