ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Monday recommended the elevation of Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan as a Supreme Court judge to fill the vacant seat of a permanent judge.

The commission also recommended nomination of senior-most judge of LHC Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah as new chief justice of the LHC.

Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan will perform his duties as SC judge until August 2025. Likewise, LHC senior judge Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah may work as Punjab’s top judge until November 27, 2024. Both judges were appointed LHC judges on September 15, 2009.

The recommendations were made during a meeting of the JCP with Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali in the chair. Senior judges of SC, Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Ashtar Ausaf, representatives of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and law ministers of Sindh and Punjab provinces attended the meeting.

On this occasion, the commission recommended four names as additional judges of Sindh High Court (SHC) to fill the vacant seats. Those recommended are District and Sessions Judge Rasheed Sumro and senior lawyers Arshad Hussain Khan, Saleem Jessar and Hamayun Khan. However, the commission dropped the names of Masood Khan, Abdul Hamid Barakzai and Sarfaraz Akhund.

The approved number of SHC judges is 40. However, after appointment of the aforementioned judges, still there would be three vacant seats. Under Article 175 (A) of the Constitution, all recommended names would be sent to a parliamentary committee for approval.
