KARACHI: A social media post by a United States diplomat in Karachi became talk of the town when he put pictures on Facebook showing a gift box that contained mangoes inside which he received from a local friend.

Clad in a navy blue kurta shalwar, the US Consulate General Karachi Spokesperson Brian Asmus posted three pictures showing his love for Pakistani mangoes. One of the pictures showed Brian Asmus trying to hide the mango box with a curt smile on his face.

Two other pictures showed him bent on his knees while hiding the box in a drawer. Sindhri mangoes are a leading variety of the fruit from Mirpurkhas and are famous for their unique aroma, as well as their colour and texture. These mangoes are exported to different countries during the season.

“Just going to put them in a safer place so that I get to keep them all. What could possibly go wrong?” he captioned the pictures.

He was glad that “this time he had outsmarted his staff as now they will never find the box. By the time my staff figures things out, I will have eaten them all”.

Until the filing of this story, some 33,000 people had Liked the post while 78 had shared. “Happy to write I got some more mangoes courtesy of our friends at a private TV channel. But this time, there are none of the mangoes missing, thanks to my ‘mango-thieving staff’,” he wrote.

He asserted that Pakistan was good at giving and said, “Mangoes are the best gift of all.”

Showing the love for Sindhri mangoes, he said that he could “not wait to try them tonight”.

Replying to a comment by Shahzeb Inam Mahar, Asmus said, “Sindhri mangoes are being sold all over the US now. Look around or better yet ask your supermarket manager to check into it,” he advised Shahzeb.

To another inquiry made by Sohail Rathore, Asmus informed that he had also received honey, and original oil all the way from Tharparkar, as well as dates and local shawls, and not to mention common items from Sindh.
