82 profiteers held, 1,320 fined in capital

ISLAMABAD: The monitoring teams of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration have arrested 82 profiteers during the first week of Ramadan from various markets of the city.

The teams also fined 1320 shopkeepers a sum of Rs 24,68,400 for overcharging and selling unhygienic food since the first of Ramadan.

On the directives of Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan, the ICT administration had intensified a campaign to fix the prices of eatable items in the city to relieve the citizens, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdul Sattar Isani said.

As many as 3275 shops selling fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, samosas, pakoras and other fried items were inspected by the ICT teams during the first week of Ramadan, he said.

The ICT administration had constituted about 20 teams headed by Assistant Commissioners (ACs) and magistrates to control the prices of commodities and ensure their quality.

The ICT teams inspected 537 shops randomly on Monday in the ICT, out of which 201 were fined Rs.405,000 while two persons were sent to a judicial lock-up.

The teams raided various markets of the city and fined 247 shops a sum of Rs.518,600/- and sent 13 persons to judicial a lock-up.

The price checking teams of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration Friday arrested 27 profiteers for overcharging and selling sub-standard food items from various markets of the city besides issuing fine tickets to 270 shopkeepers amounting to Rs 563,000 out of a total of 730 inspected shops.

Likewise, the ICT Administration Thursday arrested 10 people and fined numerous shops for violation of the Ramadan Act. Isani said the ICT Administration was continuously making efforts keeping in view the best interest of the residents.
