PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council (KPBC) has decided to take action against lawyers who protested outside Peshawar High Court chief justice’s courtroom and convened a meeting in this regard on June 18. KPBC Vice Chairman Tariq Afridi and Executive Committee Chairman Ijaz Sabi appeared before PHC Chief Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel when proceedings started on Monday on a notice issued by the court.

The chief justice asked the KPBC office-bearers to explain what action the council had taken against the lawyers after the PHC registrar’s office provided it a video of the protest staged by the lawyers outside his courtroom. “The council should inform the bench if any action has been taken against 71 lawyers who protested against the judges and broke nameplates outside their courtrooms,” he said. Sabi said the council had received the video and referred the case to its disciplinary committee. He said that action would be taken against the lawyers who were most active in the protest. The chief justice directed him to present disciplinary committee’s report to the court and inform the court if any action had been taken against them.

Additional Advocate General Syed Qaiser Ali Shah said the advocate general had filed his reply as chairman of the KPBC. The case was later adjourned till July 15. KPBC members staged a protest outside chief justice’s courtroom and broke nameplates outside various courtrooms after the court punished a lawyer for misconduct.
