Future of ToRs committee in doldrums

ISLAMABAD: The future of parliamentary committee constituted to draft terms of reference (ToRs) for investigation into Panama leaks is in doldrums as opposition is likely to announce boycott of the body today, sources told Daily Times.

The joint opposition will hold a consultation session on the future political strategy today, followed by a press conference at the residence of Senator Aitzaz Ahsan.

The parliamentary committee could not reach any consensus in the eighth meeting as well and even no date was announced for the next session.

Sources believe that both opposition and government do not want accountability of anyone and the entire exercise is just a ‘time buying game’. “Both have agreed to disagree on the ToRs as both are afraid that if they send ToRs to the Supreme Court, they can themselves come into the accountability net,” sources said. “Even PTI’s stance on ToRs is not as hard as it was in the beginning. PPP wants that all opposition parties should get united as solo flight of anyone can damage the opposition alliance. Due to these reasons, demand of prime minister’s resignation was not made at any stage during the parliamentary committee meetings,” sources added.

In today’s press conference, opposition may announce boycott of the parliamentary committee and sideline itself from the future proceedings. A new political game is likely to start after Eid, sources claimed.
