BALASORE: India on Thursday test fired a new surface-to-air ballistic missile jointly developed with Israel from a defence base off the Odisha cost, Indian media reported.

Barak-8, a medium range missile (MR-SAM), was fired from a mobile launcher in Chandipur’s Integrated Test Range (ITR), a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official said.

“The test launch was a grand success and it met all the targets,” he said. The missile includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) system for detection, tracking and guidance, they said.

Indian media reported that the four-metre-long ballistic missile can hit a target within a range of 70 kilometres and can carry a payload of 60 kilograms. A DRDO scientist said the missile along with the MF-STAR has the capability to neutralise any aerial threats.

The missile has been developed by the Indian Defence Research Development Laboratory (DRDL), a laboratory of DRDO based at Hyderabad, in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), he said.
