Disability – It’s much more than a wheelchair

Author: Mishal Khan

Whenever we hear the word ‘disable’ the first thought that comes to our mind is someone sitting on a wheelchair. Disabled people are also known as special persons. In Pakistan, many disabled live in Punjab

Rural areas in Punjab have 66 per cent disabled population. According to a survey, 28 per cent are literate disabled people and 14 per cent disabled persons are employed.

Here the question arises that why is there a lack of education and employment for disabled persons? Is there any solution? The problem is that we bound them in a circle that ‘you cannot do this’ because they are not a normal person.

‘You can’t’ and ‘you are not like others’ are the thoughts the society imprints on the minds of these people. If parents, somehow, send their disabled child to school than they fear for the latter’s safety.

Government should build special schools colleges or universities or there should be a unique strategy for disabled persons so that they can live like a normal person. When it comes to job, our society does not accept an employee who is disabled. They think that they don’t have any qualities. Who are we to judge others’ abilities?

Government should notice these issues and should open vacancies for these people. On the other hand, if parents have faith in their disabled children then no one should have the right to criticize the special persons.

It is the responsibility of parents to give much attention to their special children because they need it. Parents should support them in every step whether it’s education or sports. Their child should know and feel that someone is backing him or her. Parents should encourage their children’s passion and interest. They should motivate their children because motivation and support mean much to them.

Disability doesn’t mean that there is no hope. Everyone has a special purpose and you have to find that purpose and fight for yourself. Disability is much more than a wheelchair. We all are disable, in one way or another, because no one is perfect.
