ISLAMABAD: The leader of the opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah appears to be in trouble on the issue of the appointment of new members in the Election Commission as other opposition parties wanted their names to also be included in the final list, sources told Daily Times.
According to the constitution , the opposition leader is not bound to consult any other opposition party while finalising the names of the Election Commission members. He only consults the prime minister and if both agree on the names then these names are sent to the parliamentary committee on the appointment of the chief election commissioner and the members of the ECP and the parliamentary committee assents the names for a notification, sources said.
The government and the opposition would once again start their dialogue on the above issue and Khursheed Shah is reaching Islamabad today to hold meetings with Ishaq Dar who is nominated by the prime minister, sources said. The opposition leader also decided to summon the meeting of all opposition parties’ leaders in the parliament so he could take them into confidence and seek names from them as well so that the opposition could give their names with a consensus, sources said. “It is not an easy task to complete for us,it’s a tough job and can take many days. We want to keep the opposition united so Khursheed Shah has summoned the meeting of the opposition parties. The opposition leader has also requested Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to share the names as soon as possible so that he could present these names to the other opposition parties, sources close to the opposition leader told Daily Times.
On the other hand, government sources said that according to new constitutional provision , a technocrat or a retired bureaucrate could also become a member of the Election Commission beside retired judges of high courts. “Yes,we are considering that two members should be taken from the retired judiciary, one technocrat and one retired bureaucrat can be taken to complete the Election Commission”, they said. Sources also said Senator Pervez Rasheed was in touch with Ishaq Dar and Khursheed Shah and was requesting them to finalise the names to the committee.
