Dozens of government schools in KP nonfunctional

PESHAWAR: Fifty five government schools for boys and girls in the rural union councils of the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtukhwa (KP) have been non-functional for the last five years. According to the data of district Peshawar education officers, more than 55 government schools, for boys and girls including primary, middle and high schools have been non-functional for the last five years.

The non-functional schools are located in rural union councils of the Town-4 district Peshawar including Mattani, Mathra, Urmar, Badabher Sherkera.

Haroon Sifat, Nazim Town-4 told Daily Times on Friday that once the power devolution process had been completed, local body representatives would be able to take action against the non-functional schools in the concerned union councils.

However, he said that he would hold a meeting with the DEO Peshawar to discuss the matter regarding the non-functional schools of the Town-4.

District Education Officer Peshawar said that six government schools were non-functional due to various reasons, adding that some of the schools were closed by land grabbers while others were due to court stay orders.

In her jurisdiction, she said, six out of 17 schools were closed and non-functional. She added the list of all non-functional schools in the district had been corresponded with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Peshawar to take steps against land grabbers and withdraw the court stay orders.

District Nazim Peshawar Arbab Asim said data had been collected for all non-functional schools and after consultation with both male and female EDOs, all schools would reopen soon.

He said the district council had constituted a committee in this regard. The official website of Secondary and Elementary Education department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) carries no information regarding the non-functional schools in district Peshawar.
