PESHAWAR: A glowing tribute was paid to the late Abdul Sattar Edhi for his extraordinary humanitarian work and welfare efforts at the University of Peshawar here on Wednesday. Known Pashto writer Dr Salma Shaheen said that people like Abdul Sattar Edhi were born once in a millennium. “Abdul Sattar Edhi learnt the practice of charity from his mother who used to give him two coins, one for him and the second to donate to the poor,” she narrated Edhi’s words.

The event was organised by “The Society” at Peshawar University Teaching Association (PUTA) hall, University Of Peshawar. Scores of people from different walks of life including students, teachers, journalists, social workers and Edhi foundations worker participated in the gathering.

In a panel discussion, panelist Dr Waheeda said that Edhi served his ill mother from the age of 11 and couldn’t get an education due to the hurdles.

She suggested that students of social work should look to him and do research on his social work and his personality. Mujahid Khan, Spokesperson of Edhi foundation shared his life experiences with Edhi and said that he helped people in disasters, bomb blasts, natural disasters, road accidents, target killings and many more to try to serve humanity. Khan added that he was an open book and we need to carry on his mission and help needy people in the society.

To pay tribute and respect, two minutes of silence were observed in PUTA hall, University of Peshawar. Not only the students and social workers, but people from all sects and genders paid tribute to Edhi. Paro Vice President of Transgender Association wrote on a banner hanged on the wall of Peshawar Press Club that Edhi was a great man in the world and a symbol of humanity for the world. The State bank of Pakistan also announced on Saturday that they would issue a Rs 50 coin in honour of Abdul Sattar Edhi.
