Qandeel is no more on social media

LAHORE: Qandeel Baloch, who was murdered by her brother, is no more on social media as her popular page has been removed from Facebook, a local TV channel reported.

The official page of the late social media sensation that hosted her photos and videos is no longer available, and her Instagram account has also been deleted. Any account that belongs to a deceased individual is automatically made into a memorialized account where friends and family can share memories on the timeline, according to the Facebook policy.

However, the pages with a sole admin whose account was memorialized will be removed from Facebook if the company receives a valid request, according to the site. But the reason for removing accounts of the late celebrity is unknown. Qandeel’s claim to fame was her risqué Facebook and Instagram uploads which many found objectionable.

In a shocking turn of events, Qandeel was murdered by her brother in Multan in the name of honour killing. Reports state she had been receiving threats from her brother owing to her pictures and videos on Facebook. In Pakistan, the entertainment-consuming audience caught between two opposing impulses, according to Mehreen Hasan, a senior journalist.

“On the one hand we seem to have developed a taste for reality-TV culture and want to know every juicy detail about the lives of ‘famous’ people,” she wrote. On the other hand, “we hold tightly to our ideas of what constitutes ‘moral’ vs ‘immoral’ behaviour for these very same people,” she said.
