DUBAI: Former Punjab governor and Pakistan People’s Party Secretary General Latif Khosa said on Sunday that the issue of extension in Rangers’ powers would soon be resolved, a private TV channel reported.

He said while talking to journalists that the PPP was still committed to the Charter of Democracy. He also alleged that Azad Jammu Kashmir elections were not conducted in free and fair manner. He said that if the government did not agree to a transparent inquiry pertaining to the Panama leaks, then PPP would bring forth a bill into the parliament.

Talking on the issue of Rangers’ extension and powers, he said that the Chief Minister was the Chief Executive hence he had the legal right to call the paramilitary force anytime. “The issue of Rangers’ extension and powers will be resolved by today.” He added that the Rangers had done impressive work in Karachi and had established peace in the city.

He also said that it was not fair to assume or say that the Sindh police did not have any hand in restoring law and order in the city. He gave credit to both the Rangers and the police for establishing peace in Karachi.  He also criticised Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan several times during his press conference. He said that Nisar should wait his turn and should stop issuing threats. “After the 18th Amendment, Nisar cannot interfere in matters of provincial autonomy,” he added.

He said that he knew that militants had found a safe haven in the South Punjab. A meeting was held by the senior leadership of PPP earlier in Dubai which was presided over by PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. The meeting remained inconclusive regarding the issue of Rangers’ extension and powers in Sindh.
