LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday ordered the departments concerned to complete the construction of District Jails of Hafizabad, Narowal, Shujabad, Rajanpur and Khanewal in two months.

The court also constituted a committee headed by provincial Advocate General Shakeelur Rehman to ensure the jails’ timely completion. Justice Muhammad Farrukh Irfan Khan passed the orders while hearing a petition filed by Rida Qazi for construction of new jails in the province.

During the hearing, the advocate general of Punjab appeared before the court and submitted a report, regarding five provincial jails under construction, saying that all the departments concerned had been sensitised and the matter was under purview of the chief executive of the province.

He said that all the respondents were aware of the deadline and the construction work would be completed on time. The court was also told that GEPCO and MEPCO had not yet provided electricity to District Jail Hafizabad and District Jail Rajanpur, respectively.

At this, the court warned that if electricity was not provided by the next date of hearing then contempt proceedings would be initiated against the officials concerned.

However, the court expressed dissatisfaction on the departments’ performance and sought a detailed report on the construction work of jails. The court adjourned till October 18.
