From ‘Suno ke main hu jawan’ to ‘Pagal’

Author: Turyal Azam Khan

The winters of 2004 were when a cult hit emerged. An emerging pop-rock act would entertain our television sets. Indus Music and The Musik would play the song continuously that became an iconic hit among teenagers. Noori’s music video/song Suno Ke Main Hun Jawan tapped a rarely targeted but very supporting targeting audience; young people.

Noori would become a popular band whose energetic youthful anthems would resonate with the youth. Ali Noor’s new song Pagal is the combination, evolution, and reminder; however, you see it of all of that.

When you’re old, you dislike remakes of your favorite childhood shows, movies or music; this is why people did not respond well to remakes of Power Puff Girls or Teen Titans, which are aimed at a younger audience. What happens when you want to target the same audience that grew up with your show? You release a mature version of the same show for the target audience that has now grown up; this is why the new Samurai Jack was so well received. It was aimed at the same target audience. The case is quite similar to that of Ali Noor’s Pagal. Even though Pagal is not Noori, Ali Noor does remind one what made the audience felt in love with him in the first place; the upbeat pop-rock music, the catchy lyrics and the wave of energy presented.

‘Pagal’ is about mental freedom, as the song’s YouTube video description describes. Often, many people seek interpretations in the songs they listen to Noori songs included. Many of Noori’s songs that have been interpreted differently are songs such as Suno Ke Main Hun Jawan, Tum Hans Diye, Mujhay Roko and many others. Pagal, however, does not appear to be interpreted differently. It actually is about the concept of mental freedom. You want a commercial touch to it, but you can’t, you want to interpret it your own way, but you can’t. It is about mental freedom, as it says. Pagal is not aimed at an audience, it is aimed at Ali Noor himself and he just wants people to listen to it and relate to it. Pagal is personal

Pagal is Ali Noor’s second song after Banjo from his debut album, also titled Pagal. Pagal is not a commercial album in anyway. It is like a personal diary that one wants to share with the world. You can love it or hate it, but it will be out there in its full form no matter what.
