Sacked education officer sets up NGO to ‘promote’ education

KARACHI: A sacked education officer, who was allegedly involved in embezzlement of Rs 100 in the Sindh Education Department, has established a non-government organisation (NGO) to promote education in the provincial capital.

According to insiders, former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah removed Syeda Neelofar two months ago over corruption charges. Ironically, Neelofar has now established a NGO named ‘Ocean Welfare Organisation’ seeking national and international donations, sources said.

According to an official letter available with Daily Times, Neelofar is working as general secretary for the NGO while Anfas is the president of the NGO who is forcing teachers, girl students to become life members of the NGO and cooperate with them in
this regard.

Neelofar is accused of collected from all girl students of class VI to VIII (75,000 students) Rs 150 each for centralised examination and rakes in Rs 11.25 million. From March 2013 to July 2014, she allegedly collected Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 from each school.
She is also accused of arranging fake appointment of ex-directors.

She has allegedly hired services of Aajiz Jamali as her PRO on Rs 100,000 salary per month to advocate her positive image in media and at other forums.

The teachers and other educational associations had grave concern over her activities.

When contacted, Social Welfare Secretary Shariq Hussain said that an inquiry would be launched to investigate who had given approval for the establishment of the NGO. According to the secretary, the social welfare director use to give approval for establishment of any NGO.

However, Anfas Ali Shah of the Ocean Welfare Organisation told Daily Times that the chief minister had apologised to Neelofar Ali for issuing her a show-cause notice.
