No serious damage was caused by the rocket which was fired from the al-Faiyadh Village in the southeast of the airport, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement.

It declined to provide further details.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the rocket attack, but Baghdad airport and the Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops across Iraq, as well as the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone in Baghdad, have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks.

The attack came hours after the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi left for an official visit to Washington, where he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Aug. 20 to discuss bilateral ties and cooperation in various fields.

More than 5,000 U.S. troops have been deployed in Iraq to support the Iraqi forces in the battle against the Islamic State militants, mainly for training and advisory purposes.
