High winds halt rowing and tennis in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO: High winds caused the Olympic rowing programme to be postponed on Sunday while play at the tennis was delayed by 90 minutes on outside courts. Rowing’s global governing body World Rowing said a new schedule for the regatta would be released soon as winds buffeted the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. The decision came after competitors complained about conditions on Saturday, when high winds made for choppy waters which led to the the descent and on one of the corners I came around and there was a guy on the road who crashed and I had nowhere to go,” said Porte in quotes published by the Australian Olympic Committee. “It was fortunate a tree stopped me from going over the side. “I’m bruised and battered and sore and I’m disappointed but lucky I’m not worse off.” After the race, Porte had tweeted jokingly alongside a picture of him sitting in the safety netting on the side of the road: “So that’s how my day went, me vs a tree. Not really sure who came off better #treehugger.” Nibali suffered a broken collarbone while Henao fractured his pelvis in a crash filled race where many riders – including Porte – also suffered mechanical issues.
