Tolerance: a rare trait

Author: SM Hamza

Somehow I stumbled across a video in which Gen Ayub was being welcomed at the United States. Afterwards I came across a couple of more footages of our leaders from the past. Startled by the immense amount of respect, being given to our leaders by the most powerful and invincible people at the time, had a profound impact on me. I was convinced to think and ponder on the events and reasons for the decline of the perilous journey to success, we were on. The downfall of regard, courtesy, respect, dignity and honor for our country.

In the pursuit of coming up with a solid or robust theory, I do have my 2 cents to share. The biggest threat that our beloved homeland has and still is facing is not any external threat but an internal one. Such an internal threat that is being used, propagated and cashed by external powers. The threat is the division! Not any division of a province, land or a city but an intricate division of our social values and minds. To analyze the future, as told by the beholders of Witt, one should look back at the history. The British ruled us for many years. The key element utilized by the colonists for conquering and ruling, us, the Sub continent was the infamous ” DIVIDE AND RULE ” doctrine. Yes, we have heard and studied it all during our academic lives, not realizing that this agenda is still applicable. More alarming is that this troublesome act is already being exploited and used. If one wants to destroy any country, state, family, tribe, political party or any other clan this satanic trick has always been successful. To split and divide a society has proven to be an easy target. However, to unite the same society would be considered quite a milestone.

Our nation and people are being divided into smaller and smaller groups and factions. The liberalism doctrine is prospering in the country but so is the intolerance for the conservatives. Conservative’s hatred and enmity for liberals is also taking its flight, that too with a full throttle. Social issues are quite delicate, emotional and sensitive. They Pitt people against one another creating a divide and split amongst humans. As they are near and dear to the society’s heart, debates on them gives birth to an environment that is toxic, hostile, intimidating, intolerant and detrimental for it’s people. A Shia being denied blood by a Sunni should always be dealt accordingly with utmost justice but making it an enormous deal and hyping it will ultimately have repercussions for the very society. The people with the ill intentions for Pakistan would strive in making it a trending topic with all their brains and muscles. Many of us generally share such news while giving our stance for the sake of awareness with a good and a positive intention. Not realizing, the external powers use the art of lobbying and manipulation. This results in a bad taste and distance amongst the people belonging to both the faiths. It might seem to take a small toll but it ultimately results in an event related to sectarian violence.

Same is the case between the liberals and conservatives. The similar pattern can also be observed between the members of the opposite political parties. During violence in such partisan-conflicts, the one cult that benefits the most is usually the main culprit. Looking at a bigger picture from a bird’s eye, we may be able to ascertain the beneficiary. If, a Pakistani liberal is against a Pakistani conservative, a Pakistani Sunni against a Pakistani Shia, a Pakistani civilian against a Pakistani govt official, a Pakistani citizen against a Pakistani law enforcement agency, will have unintended dexterous and lethal consequences only for Pakistan and her people. Analytical thinking coupled with an open mind, we can know the mastermind, instigator, and the anti state element behind such partisan-conflicts and differences.
