ISLAMABAD: The world community strongly condemned the suicide bombing at a hospital in Quetta that left at least 70 people dead and more than 100 seriously injured on Monday. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the suicide bombing, saying it was “particularly appalling” that the suicide attack targeted a group of mourners.

The bomber struck a crowd of some 200 people gathered at the Civil Hospital in Quetta after the fatal shooting of a senior lawyer earlier in the day. “The targeting of mourners at a civilian hospital makes the attack particularly appalling,” said Ban’s spokesman Farhan Haq. Ban urged the Pakistani government to do its utmost to bring those behind the attack to justice. US Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale strongly condemned the attack in Quetta. “On behalf of the US Mission to Pakistan, I strongly condemn today’s horrendous and despicable attacks in Quetta, the murder of Bilal Kasi, the Balochistan Bar Association president, and the bombing at the Civil Hospital,” the US ambassador said in a statement issued by the US Embassy here. He extended his deepest condolences to the victims and their families during the time of grief. “This brutal and senseless attack on civilians, so many of them lawyers working to bring justice to their country, will not undermine one of the most important pillars of Pakistan’s democracy and civil society,” the statement said.
