Bomb attack on police injures 14 in Quetta

QUETTA: A roadside bomb apparently targeting a judge injured at least 13 people in Quetta on Thursday, officials said, days after a major attack killed most of the city’s senior lawyers.

“The bomb was planted on a bridge in the city, which went off immediately after the vehicle of an Islamic court judge passed by it,” said Akbar Harifal, home secretary of Balochistan. The judge, Zahoor Shehwani, survived, he added, but the blast hit his security escort vehicle, injuring four police personnel and nine passers-by.

Hamid Shakeel, a senior local police official, confirmed the attack and the casualties.

According to Balochistan Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti, “The police vehicle was targeted in the blast.” He said that three to four kilogramme explosives were used in the bomb. He said that militants wanted to sabotage Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations, and vowed to frustrate their plans.

Police officials said that militants planted a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) on the roadside near Sariab Bridge on Zarghoon Road and detonated it when a police vehicle escorting a judge passed-by.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
