KARACHI: With an aim to detect thousands of political appointments, the Sindh’s Local Government department has planned to make the salary issuance of all the employees online with the Accountant General Sindh office, Daily Times has learnt.

In this regard, Secretary Local Government Baqa Ullah Unar has forwarded a pro-forma to the Karachi Municipal Corporation, all the District Municipal Corporations and town municipal administration of all the districts so that their salaries are paid online.

According to the sources, paing online salaries of more than 80,000 employees would help remove the over-limit political appointees in the town administration. Besides, the pro -forma would also help to get proper data of all the employees, sanctioned strength of staff and the appointments etc.

“There are more than 80,000 employees who are currently withdrawing their salaries however, the filing of the pro-forma would help government to remove around 18,000 to 20,000 political appointees”, sources added.

The Local Government Department of Sindh has been at the frontline as the political induction remained on since the ruling PPP formed its government in 2008. The pro-forma would also benefit the Local Government department to remove the political appointees in the city’s administration and the district municipal corporations made by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) when the party was part of the government, sources opined.

When contacted, Secretary Local Government Baqa Ullah Unar told Daily Times that the process was underway and it would be completed very shortly.

In the past, the employees of the district and town municipal authorities were getting salaries directly, however, now they would get salaries through the Accountant General Sindh office and the treasury offices in their respective districts, the secretary added. To a question, the secretary added that after filing of the pro-forma, the authorities would know about how many appointments are in excess against the actual strength of employees, which would help save huge funds also.
