Mass George Floyd protests rock US for eighth day

Nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice continued Tuesday evening for an eighth straight day as US President Donald Trump continued to call for “LAW & ORDER!” to be restored.

Curfews continued to be the norm in major metropolises as protesters continued to buck the restrictions.

Protesters ignored the Government-imposed curfew to hit the streets as the National Guard was called up in 29 states to assist in quelling disturbances.

And while violence seems to be more diluted in the wake of the president’s speech yesterday – in which he threatened military action – looting is still taking place.

According to local news reports, six people were arrested on Tuesday night in connection with looting of a pawn shop in Austin, Texas, as well as one in North Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Photos appear to show protesters trying to deescalate violence at an in intersection in Anaheim, California, amid concerns the protests are being hijacked.

It comes as thousands kneeled outside the US Capitol Building, chanting “silence is violence” and “no justice, no peace”.

In Washington, DC, near-uniformly peaceful demonstrations continued through the night, but at least one car fire was reported in the nation’s capital. The cause of the fire is unknown.

George Floyd died May 25 after a since-fired Minneapolis Police Department officer pinned his neck to the ground for nearly nine minutes, despite Floyd’s repeated pleas that he could not breathe. His death prompted largely peaceful mass demonstrations that have continued across the US, though some have devolved into violence and looting.

Derek Chauvin, the white officer who held Floyd’s neck to the ground with his knee, now faces third-degree murder and manslaughter charges. Three other officers have been fired in relation to Floyd’s death.
