Treason, terror cases lodged against Altaf, MQM leaders

KARACHI: The police on Tuesday registered four cases of treason and terrorism against Altaf Hussain and more than a dozen Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leaders over the chaos that erupted following the party chief’s speech in which he criticised the military establishment and allegedly raised anti-Pakistan slogans. Artillery Maidan Police Station in District South lodged two cases against MQM leaders, including Dr Farooq Sattar, Kanwar Naveed Jamil, Aamir Khan, Shahid Pasha, Qamar Mansoor, Gulfaraz Khattak, Abdul Qadir, Javed Kazim, Arif Khan and Akram Rajput, and about 150 MQM workers who were present at the hunger strike camp.

Sindh Police IG Allah Dino Khawaja talking to journalists on Tuesday evening said that a treason case had been registered against Altaf Hussain for his anti-state speech, while the other was regarding the incidents that followed his remarks, which saw some media houses being attacked by MQM activists. Two more similar cases of treason and terrorism were registered against the party chief and more than a dozen MQM leaders. An FIR No 374/16 under sections 120 B, 121A, 123A, 124A, 109 and 29D of the Telegraph Act, with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, was registered on behalf of a citizen namely Muhabbat Khan at the SITE Super Highway Police Station, while FIR No 134/16 was registered on behalf of a citizen namely Waheed at the Steel Town Police Station. Meanwhile, the Sindh Home Department on Tuesday imposed a ban for two months on demonstrations, rallies and assembly of more than five persons in the so-called red zone of the metropolis.
