Each day, ETX Studio puts the spotlight on a number that stands out for making headlines in one way or another. Today, it is a new record for the fastest download speed ever achieved: a whopping 44.2 terabits per second (Tbps). An article published on the website Nature Communications explains the details of the extraordinary technical feat, which was achieved by a team of researchers from three Australian universities, using an existing optical fiber connection over a distance of 75 km. In theory, the new speed record could enable internet users to download 1,000 HD movies in a single second As to the sheer scale of the bandwidth involved, bear in mind that 44 terabits is one million times faster than a standard broadband connection of around 33 Mbps in the USA, according to the 2019 Worldwide Broadband Speed League report published by British company Cable.
