Rain changes weather for good, exposes govt’s lethargy

Author: Staff Report

LAHORE: The intermittent downpour on Thursday resulted in pleasant weather after intense heat in the provincial capital.

Heavy rain was preceded by dark clouds and strong wind, which diminished the affects of scorching weather in the city. Recorded temperature of the Walled City fell to 30 degrees while humidity in the air was recorded at around 95. However, casualties and major difficulties also accompanied the pleasantness of the occasion. A minor girl from Sabzazar lost her life due to electrocution while at least three others sustained injuries due to roof collapse amidst heavy rain in Manawan. Moreover, at least 136 feeders were tripped while low-lying areas of the city remained filled with rainwater. The roads and streets presented the sight of ponds and caused inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. Massive traffic jams were witnessed throughout the day due to inundated rainwater on roads and roadsides. Muhammad Shakeel, a reporter, experienced a major foot-injury, as he slipped into a manhole that was not visible due to excessive rainwater. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said that more rains would continue to lash parts of Punjab for two more days.

It is lamentable that the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) made no effort in dealing with possible repercussions of rain despite the problem being a regular part of the Walled City. All that came from the department was a statement regarding implementation of ‘rain emergency’ in the city.

WASA is not the only authority that needs to be called on its inefficiency. Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is equally responsible, as the authority’s negligence electrocuted and subsequently killed many innocent citizens.

The affects of heavy showers were not limited to flooded roads, manholes and traffic problems. In many rural parts of the city, high-tension wires pass very close to the houses and present a significant risk to residents. At least one minor girl got killed in the provincial capital on Thursday due to electrocution, while three members of the same family lost their lives a few weeks ago owing to the same reason.

It is deplorable that the authorities were still unconcerned regarding an issue that frequently strikes the city and almost never leaves without considerable damage.
