Pakistan’s coronavirus death toll hits 514; 5,801 recovered so far

The nationwide tally of Covid-19 patients soared to 22,237, with 8,133 cases reported in Punjab, 8,189 in Sindh, 3,499 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 1,495 in Balochistan, 386 in Gilgit Baltistan, 464 in Islamabad and 71 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The virus has claimed at least 514 lives while at least 5,801 coronavirus patients have recovered.

Another 19 Covid-19 recoveries were reported in the country on Tuesday, according to the government’s official portal for tracking the spread of the disease. With the new numbers, the total has risen to 5,801.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah Tuesday said that 307 new cases have been detected from 2,250 test conducted on Tuesday, while 11 more people lost their lives taking the death toll to 148.

In a statement issued from the CM’s House, he said that 2,250 samples were tested which resulted in 307 new cases. The health department has conducted 68,873 tests so far against which 8189 positive cases were diagnosed, he said.

Shah said that 42 more patients of coronavirus recovered and discharged to go to their homes, adding that a total of 1,670 patients have recovered so far which constitutes a recovery rate of 20.5 percent.

According to the chief minister, 6,370 patients are under treatment, of them 5,139 are in home isolation, 736 at Isolation centres and 495 at different hospitals. He said 82 patients are in a critical condition, including 13 on ventilators. Shah said out of 307 new coronavirus cases, 237 belong to Karachi, and of them 70 reported in Central, 45 in East, 21 in Korangi, 55 in Malir, 34 in South and 12 in West Karachi. He said 21 new cases emerged in Khairpur, 12 in Kashmore-Kandhkot, eight in Larkana, five in Hyderabad, three in Sukkur and one each in Badin, Sanghar and Shaheed Benazirabad.

Another 174 coronavirus cases were reported in Balochistan, according to the situation report issued by the health department. This is the highest number of cases reported in the province in a single day.”863 tests have been conducted on Tuesday which is also the highest number so far,” it added.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Health Department confirmed another 14 cases of coronavirus to raise the region’s tally to 386. With three new recoveries, total number of active cases stands at 101 in the region.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department said that 211 new cases – 58 from international flights quarantine – were reported in the past 24 hours, taking the provincial tally to 3,499. It also confirmed nine new deaths – five in Peshawar and one each in Charsadda, Mardan, Mansehra and Haripur – taking the death toll to 194. Another 19 coronavirus patients recuperated, bringing the total number of recoveries to 875 in the province.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad District Bar Association has suspended all activities after a lawyer and two judges tested positive for the coronavirus. According to a statement issued here, the only solution is to ensure social distancing and stay away from court proceedings and remain in isolation. “Therefore, it has been resolved that affairs and court work (including all special courts) will remain closed till May 20,” it added.
