Is politics for power worth human lives?

Author: Masood Chaudhary

Barack Obama, former president of the United States of America, not very long ago, said, “We should never forget that God granted us the power to reason so that we would do his work here on earth – so that we would use science to cure disease, and heal the sick, and save lives.” Unfortunately, today when we are at the time of crisis, facing pandemic at one hand and financial crisis on the second, dominating people around the globe, practicing dirty politics for power, which is, by no means, good for inhabitants of the planet earth. Let’s see the facts why I have arrived to this harsh, bitter, but somewhat, plain truth.

When I am writing this column, most affected nation by COVID 19 in the world, in terms of numbers, is the US with in terms of COVID-19 cases and deaths. Former US vice-president and likely Democrat presidential candidate for US presidential election of 2020 Joe Biden has accused US president Donald Trump of trying to delay the presidential elections due in November this year. This accusation is not the first time. He is accusing Trump for months now but earlier the situation was not this much serious. Will elections be delayed? Is this a proactive approach to fight the pandemic? Unfortunately, the answer is no! What happens in the USA affects the globe instantaneously.

Market domination is the goal of any organization thriving in a capitalist economy where no one cares how many lives are lost, before reaching to the cure which can end the suffering of the people

Market domination is the goal of any organization thriving in a capitalist economy where no one cares how many lives are lost, before reaching to the cure which can end the suffering of the people. Currently in the US, alone 21 companies, including Gilead Sciences, Moderna, Amgen and Adaptive Biotechnologies, BioNtech, Pfizer, CalciMedica, CytoDyn, Dynavax Technologies, GlaxoSmithKline, Heat Biologics, Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi, Roche, and Translate Bio, are working on vaccine. Whereas, in fact, total of more than 90 vaccines, 79 companies, 25 different groups, 20 different teams of research institutes &universities, and many individuals around the globe are involved in, who want to find cure to the coronavirus pandemic. This is obvious that whosoever finds the cure first, will get it patented instantaneously, so that no one else can produce the vaccine or drug, in line with their research. The company who will reach the cure first will collect large sums of profit from across the globe as well as donations and unlimited number of orders in the future. Joint ventures by the companies are underway as well but they are not enough. The more time these companies and efforts take, the more people will pass away.

This is a global crisis which needs a collective global effort. Work speaks louder than words. In my opinion 90 separate efforts against one single goal will take 90 times more time and effort to reach the cure. Shouldn’t Companies, institutions, and individuals forget their corporate politics for the time being to save precious lives of millions?

See some of the headlines from the globe in recent days which are explanatory in their own words,

“Russia accuses the US of threatening peace in the Arctic”.

What is their response? Not soft words or try to sort things out with talks. What they have done just made the following headline: “Russia flies nuclear – capable bombers over Baltic Sea in training exercise”.

“Nicolas Maduro Appoints One of America’s Most Wanted as New Oil Minister.”

“Trump Could Use ‘Nuclear Option’ to Make Saudi Arabia Pay for Oil War.”

“Pompeopushes China to provide access to Wuhan labs over coronavirus outbreak.”

“China is making the most of the coronavirus to dislodge the US as the world’s main superpower.”

“Trump Administration asks intelligence agencies to find out whether China, WHO hid info on coronavirus pandemic.”

“Trump says China could have stopped COVID-19 and suggests US will seek damages.”

“China promises not to punish New Zealand for joining Australia’s inquiry into COVID-19 origins: Foreign Minister Winston Peters”

“The Chinese public is frustrated, dismayed and disappointed with what Australia is doing now”, China’s Ambassador to Australia Cheng Jingya.

“China embassy accuses Australia of ‘petty tricks’ in coronavirus dispute.”

“Chineseembassy in India accuses ‘certain individuals’ of prejudice in Covid 19 test kits row.”

“India’s criticism of coronavirus ‘irresponsible’: China”

“India accuses China of sending faulty coronavirus test kits.”

“Poland’s PM calls on Senate to speed up work on election legislation.”

These are just the glimpse of headlines across the world. After reading these headlines you will definitely come to the conclusion that we as human beings have forgotten the values of care and respect. Nations fighting one another in the time of crisis, striving for Power, playing political chips for their gains, is not the way out for human beings. This attitude of self-proclamation must come to an end.
