NGO’s role commendable: Governor

KARACHI: Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan has said that Non-Governmental Organizations working in social sector have rendered tremendous services especially in education and health sector and it’s due to their contributions that basic amenities of life have been ensured to the masses.

He said this while talking with a 3-member delegation of Health And Nutrition Development Society (HANDS), an NGO working in social sector at the Governor House led by its Chairman Prof Abdul Ghaffar Billo.

Governor Sindh said that basic amenities of life was the right of every person of the society and Government earmarks huge funds every year in provincial budget to ensure the same. The NGOs engaged in providing facilities of health, education, clean drinking water and small business loans to masses are doing a very commendable job, he added the inclusion of local communities in related projects of these sectors have yielded very fruitful results.

He said that the community participation has ensured protection and sustainability of the projects and hence they remain beneficial for a long period of time for masses.

He said that Government would provide all the assistance available for the projects initiated in remote and far flung areas of the province including Thar and Umerkot districts so as to further expand and accelerate the same.

He commended the establishment of Disaster Risk Management Centers (DRMCs) in 13 districts of the province and said they have contributed towards helping victims of natural disasters and calamities.

Dr. Ebad lauded the proposal for establishment of Institute of Community Development (ICD) and said that it would be helpful in preparing experts and trainers in this vital sector and they would be able not only to highlight problems of the community but also evolve a comprehensive strategy to resolve the same in more amicable manner.

He said that ICD would be connected with various public sector universities so as to further promote this sector. He also pledged financial support for the Institute.
